Aaron Velasco received his B.S. in Applied Geophysics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1988 and his Ph.D. in Seismology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) in 1993.  After receiving his Ph.D., he worked for a government contractor, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), in San Diego for four years, and then accepted a staff scientist position at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in 1997.  In 2002, he accepted an associate professor position at UTEP.  His main areas of interest include nuclear verification seismology, understanding earthquakes, and defining tectonic processes throughout the world.  He also serves on several national scientific panels, and is the current president for the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).
