Dr. Gustavo Roig is currently a Professor of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Director of the Center for Diversity in Engineering and Computing, and Associate Dean in the College of Engineering and Computing at Florida International University.  Dr. Roig earned his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico in 1966.  He earned his M.E. in Electrical Engineering in 1967 and his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 1970 at the University of Florida.  For over two decades, Dr. Roig has demonstrated fierce devotion and loyalty to Florida International University, and personal dedication to the betterment of mankind.


For the last several years, Dr. Roig has been one of the top five researchers at FIU in terms of dollars brought into the university through sponsored training and research grants.  But more importantly he has helped to mold hundreds of pre-college students into success stories through the numerous special programs he runs and through his actions as an exemplary mentor and coach.


Dr. Roig has received three of the four highest awards that can be given to a faculty member of Florida International University for Teaching, Service, and Research.  He has received the University's Access and Equity Award and has been honored with the prestigious FIU Presidential Award.  He was the first recipient of the Community Service Award from FIU's Black Employees' Association in 1996, and also received the Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Award in 1991.  He was also nominated for the 2006 University Service Medallion/Distinguished Service Medallion.  He has been recognized by local, state, national and international organizations for his underlying efforts to promote the development of the human potential.  National Awards include, Appreciation for Support of University Services Activities at NASA/John F. Kennedy Space Center in 1998, Engineer of the Year 1995 Award from the Association of Cuban Engineers.  Some of the International Awards he has received include Students Teaching Award at Universidad Simon Bolivar in Caracas Venezuela and the Students Teaching Award at Instituto Universitario de las Fuerzas Armadas Nacionales in Maracay, Venezuela in 1983.


Dr. Roig has served on numerous Florida International University committees in order to resolve conflicts, clarify issues or procedures, and to assist in selecting key personnel to fill important university positions.  He served as Senator at the University Faculty Senate and was a member of the Faculty Senate Steering Committee from 1989-1991.  He also served as a member of the Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE), National Science Foundation (NSF) from October 2000-September 2003.  He served as a panelist in the White House Strategy Session Improving Hispanic Student Achievement panel "Increasing the College Completion Rate" on June 14 and 15, 2000.   He was a member of the Board of Directors of Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) from 2000-2001, and has been a member of the Advisory Committee for Engineering, National Science Foundation (NSF) from September 2000 until present.


Dr. Roig's most outstanding accomplishments and contributions are in the area of Human Potential Development and include: founding Florida Action for Minorities in Engineering (FLAME) a program that provides a year-round program for minority students who aspire to enter the engineering profession.   This program is the oldest, continuously running program at FIU dedicated to serving pre-college students.  To date, over 1000 students have become professional engineers due to the preparation provided by this program.  He also established Florida Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP), a scholarship program for undergraduate students in the areas of Math, Science, Technology and Engineering, and National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) a scholarship program for engineering students.  Dr. Roig is a founding member of Latin American Caribbean Consortium of Engineering Institutions (LACCEI) an organization which promotes FIU in 15 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.  Throughout his career Dr. Gustavo Roig has authored or co-authored over 37 articles and publications in journals and conferences.  He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, Tau Beta Pi, ASEE, and IEEE.


Dr. Roig administers GEAR UP South Dade, a summer program at FIU with 300-400 students.  Over 12,200 students have participated in six years of the program, and ENLACE Miami, a summer program at FIU with 200-250 students that has had over 20,000 participants in the five years it's been running.  He has also served as a mentor for students with disabilities.  He obtained scholarship assistance for and mentored Marco Midon, a blind student who is presently working at NASA.


Dr. Roig has continually stated that his mission in life is to serve in whatever capacity is required of him.  Without doubt, Florida International University and our community are better places because of his efforts and presence.
