 SUMMIT PROGRAM

Education Crisis Summit
Day 2: Students, Teachers, and Parents
University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA – September 20, 2008

The Competitiveness Crisis Council (CCC) has partnered with the University of Southern California (USC) to host, what promises to be, an exciting and strategic STEM involvement day.  Research shows that most students lose interest in STEM related topics/careers in middle school, thus why our target audience this year are 6-8th graders, parents, and teachers.  The intent of the event is to engage middle school students and parents in math, science, and engineering related activities with the goal of persuading the students to pursue careers in such technical fields through higher education.

Attendees will participate in interactive break-out workshops during the morning related to technology and STEM outreach programs.  Workshop Tracks are defined as followed:

Track1:  Teacher Professional Development
The Copernicus Project will be conducting teacher professional development workshops.

Track 2:  Discover Engineering Around You
Students and parents will discover how engineering is intertwined in everyday life. Hosted by Space Foundation and Raytheon.

Track3:  Why College Now?
Middle School is the key time in a student’s life to strategically motivate them to not only graduate from high school, but also graduate from college, and ideally major in an a science/engineering technical degree.  Hosted by USC Viterbi Admissions and USC MESA.

Track4:  You, the Engineer!
These STEM workshops will introduce parents and students to groups, organizations, and activities that encourage students to choose a technically related career path. Hosted by F.I.R.S.T. Robotic L.A.U.S.D. Champions, MESA Madness, and JPL Invention Challenge.

Track5:  Effective Parent Involvement
The effective parent involvement track will provide parents with information on how to pay for college and why their involvement in their children's education is key in ensuring their children’s success. Hosted by PIQE.

In the afternoon, lunch will be provided before the keynote speaker takes center stage, Jose M. Hernandez, NASA Astronaut.  Following the keynote address, the innovative STEM Technology Fair will kick off.  Several large corporations and STEM organizations will have hands-on demonstrations for all attendees during the fair.  Tech Fair confirmed participants are as follows:

Student/Parent/Teacher space is limited so please ensure that you register online no later than September 18, 2008:  http://stem2008.eventbrite.com
